Devesh Mittal and Aman Mittal from ICAR IARI created the long, slim and aromatic variety PB 1121 from Indian "Zafrani" species rice for commercial use during Kharif 2003 (Fig. 1a). Since then it has been grown on 70% of all basmati fields across India with high yields and outstanding qualities, such as fine grains with pleasant scent and long linear length of kernel ratio and elongation rate among the highest recorded for any kind of rice!
PB 1121 stands out for its exceptional qualities while adapting easily to India's growing system, becoming a profitable crop for farmers. 2017 saw its net income per hectare soar to an astounding $1440 - significantly outstripping conventional varieties like Basmati 350 or Taraori Basmati (Fig. 1b). Basmati varieties have enjoyed widespread acceptance both domestically and abroad due to their high yield, unique quality characteristics, and other benefits, playing an instrumental role in driving India's rise of basmati cultivation. India's basmati rice breeding program relies heavily on it, and molecular mapping and genetic analyses have revealed significant insights. Furthermore, its potential to increase nutrition value while decreasing chalkiness has been extensively researched.
